Privacy Policy

Who we are

SurplusNaira is an educational website that helps Nigerian salary earners estimate monthly surplus after expenses and model hypothetical investment scenarios. We are not a bank, broker, fund manager, tax adviser, or SEC-registered investment adviser. We do not hold money, open accounts for you, or execute trades.

Calculator inputs (what stays on your device)

When you use the investment calculator, you may enter information such as:

• Monthly net salary (from your payslip)
• Expense amounts (rent, food, transport, generator, other)
• Investment scenario inputs (monthly amounts, years, growth rates you choose)
• Allocation percentages (emergency fund, markets, cash)

These figures are processed in your web browser. The standalone calculator does not send these inputs to our servers, and we do not store them in a database. If you close or refresh the page, that session data is cleared unless your browser restores an unsaved form state on its own.

We also do not:

• Compute PAYE or gross-to-net tax for you
• Require an account for the standalone calculator
• Ask for your BVN, NIN, bank account, or brokerage credentials
• Recommend specific stocks, funds, or guaranteed returns

Money Planner accounts and shared records

Money Planner is different from the standalone calculator. It uses Supabase Auth for your email, password authentication, verification, and session cookies. It stores your display name, family membership, categories, budgets, expenses, refunds, and notes in a database so authorized family members can share them. Receipts are stored in a private bucket and downloaded through short-lived links. Do not share a receipt download link with anyone outside your family.

Owners and admins can manage family budgets and all expenses. Members can view family records and change their own expenses. Removing a member stops their future access while retaining attribution on historical entries. Invitation links are single-use, expire after seven days, and require the intended verified email. A pending invitation token is temporarily stored in your tab's session storage while you sign in.

Private personal workspaces and mock billing

Each verified user has a separate personal finance workspace. Other family members, including family owners and admins, cannot see its budgets, purchases, notes, receipts, or recommendations. You choose whether to record an entry in your personal workspace or a shared family workspace.

Plans currently use simulated billing only. We do not collect payment cards or charge subscriptions. When enabled for testing, a simulated plan change records the workspace, acting user, chosen plan, and time, with access expiring after thirty days. A designated family has a separate lifetime entitlement. Workspace membership may grant features to a private personal workspace without sharing its financial records.

Optional Smart insights

After explicit consent for a family, Smart insights sends OpenAI category totals, standard category types, budget variances, reporting periods, needs/wants totals, trends, and currency. Custom category names, personal names, emails, raw notes, merchant descriptions, account identifiers, and receipt contents are excluded. We request that responses are not stored by the Responses API; OpenAI's separate abuse-monitoring retention policies may still apply. Recommendations and their supporting figures are saved in your private workspace database. Turning consent off prevents new requests but does not erase existing family records or previously generated recommendations.

Family records and receipts remain until removed through the app or through a data deletion request. Contact us for account or family-wide deletion. Provider backup retention may differ from active-data deletion. Money Planner screens do not load analytics or advertisements.

Information we may collect automatically

Like most websites, our hosting provider may process standard technical data when you visit surplusnaira.com, such as:

• IP address (often truncated or anonymised by the host)
• Browser type, device type, and operating system
• Pages visited and approximate time of visit
• Referring URL (how you arrived at the site)

This data is used to deliver the site securely, prevent abuse, and understand aggregate traffic. It is handled under our hosting provider's terms (currently Vercel, Inc. when deployed).

Local storage in your browser

Outside Money Planner, we use your browser's local storage for optional consent preferences. Money Planner also uses essential authentication cookies. Local storage preferences include:

• cookie-consent — whether you accepted the cookie notice
• ad-consent — whether you agreed to optional advertising cookies (only relevant if ads are enabled)

You can clear these at any time via your browser settings (e.g. "Clear site data" for surplusnaira.com). Clearing them will show the consent banner again.

Cookie consent banner

On your first visit, we show a banner explaining that we may use analytics or ads in the future. If you click Accept, we record that choice in local storage as described above. We do not use non-essential tracking cookies until and unless those features are turned on.

Advertising (optional, not active at launch)

We may enable Google AdSense or similar advertising in the future. If enabled:

• Ads load only after you accept the consent banner and ads are enabled in our configuration
• Google and its partners may use cookies to serve and measure ads, subject to Google's policies
• Ad content is separate from our calculator results — sponsors never influence your numbers

At launch, advertising is not enabled and no ad scripts run on the site. See Google's Privacy Policy if ads are enabled later.

Analytics

We use Microsoft Clarity to understand how visitors use the site (e.g. page views, clicks, and scroll behaviour). Clarity may record anonymised session replays and heatmaps. It does not receive the numbers you type into the calculator — those stay in your browser unless you share them yourself.

Educational content and external links

Our Learn pages and instrument explainers link to official sites (SEC Nigeria, DMO, NGX, PENCOM, CBN). When you click those links, you leave surplusnaira.com and their privacy policies apply. We are not responsible for third-party websites.

Learn pages may embed YouTube videos when you choose to play them. YouTube's privacy policy applies once the player loads. Embedded videos are separate from our advertising slots.

Our social pages on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube are operated under those platforms' terms.

Children

SurplusNaira is intended for adults managing salary and personal finances. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 18. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact us and we will delete it where applicable.

Nigeria Data Protection Regulation (NDPR)

We aim to comply with Nigeria's data protection principles. Because calculator inputs stay in your browser, we minimise personal data processing. Where we process technical or consent data, our lawful bases include:

• Legitimate interest — operating a secure, free educational website
• Consent — optional cookies for ads or analytics, where you click Accept

Depending on applicable law, you may have rights to:

• Ask what data we hold about you
• Request correction or deletion of data we control
• Withdraw consent for optional cookies (clear local storage or contact us)
• Lodge a complaint with the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC)

Data retention

• Calculator inputs: not retained on our servers
• Consent flags: kept in your browser until you clear them
• Server logs: retained by our host for a limited period per their policy

Security

We serve the site over HTTPS. No system is perfectly secure; do not enter information you are uncomfortable sharing on any website, even though we do not persist your calculator figures server-side.

Changes to this policy

We may update this page when we add features (e.g. ads, analytics, or accounts). The "Last updated" date at the top will change. Continued use after changes means you accept the revised policy.
